Franciso Sigala and I C Hi Stars both secured their top career checks Saturday as their leadoff 220 held up to win the Breeder’s Invitational Classic/Challenge Non-Pro finals and earn $15,346 in Tulsa, Okla.
“I really liked her when I tried her, but I didn’t think she’d be this special,” said Sigala, 25, Weatherford, Texas, of the 5-year-old mare (Cat Ichi x Starlight Chexx x Grays Starlight) he bought from breeder and original owner EE Ranches, Whitesboro, Texas, in November.
With $3,138 in prior cutting earnings, I C Hi Stars had competed well many times at weekend events, but had never made a limited-age final until this show. The 220 she marked from the No. 1 draw during the first of two sets in the 26-horse finals was the best score she or her rider has posted.
Sigala, the brother of 2010 BI Derby Amateur Champion Isidro Sigala, shared the stage at Saturday’s competition with his 63-year-old father, Jose, who competed three times in BI Classic Amateur finals. Francisco and Isidro Sigala are also competing at the show during the ongoing Derby Non-Pro and Amateur competition.
Chisum finishes well in several divisions
A busy day and week for Atascadeo, Calif., non-pro Mandy Chisum and her 6-year-old gelding Woodys Wildest Cat couldn’t have ended much better. They earned a Co-Reserve title in the Classic/Challenge Non-Pro finals with a 217.5 Saturday morning in the first of five finals, then won the day-ending Classic/Challenge Unlimited Amateur finals during the fifth finals early Saturday night with a 222 score.
Those finishes earned Chisum two checks totaling $21,494. They also earned a $6,669 as Classic/Challenge Limited Non-Pro Champions. They earned that check based on their two-go 438 composite start in the Classic/Challenge Non-Pro division.
