The Derby Open proved to be an exciting event as 93 riders gave it their all to lay down the best runs possible during the Cactus Reining Classic Derby Open.
In the end, it was Custom Spook (Smart Spook x Custom Spinderella x Custom Crome), owned by Rancho Oso Rio LLC, Scottsdale, Ariz., and Marco Ricotta, also of Scottsdale, who slid into the top spot to take the Championship. The 2007 stallion, bred by Steve Simon, Marietta, Okla., and Ricotta scored a 225.5, 1 1/2 points higher than the reserve score. The win earned the pair a check for $13,832, which brings Custom Spooks’ Equi-Stat record to more than $162,000, and Ricotta’s to more than $377,000.
Blue Collar Tag (Whiz N Tag Chex x Kachina Oak Olena x Smart Chic Olena) and Martin Muehlstaetter marked a 224 to land a Co-Reserve Championship. The 2008 gelding is owned by Jill Smiekel-George, Incline Village, Nev., and bred by Lance Griffin, Ardmore, Okla.
Hollywood Gotta Gun (Hollywood Dun It x Katie Gun x John Gun), owned by Jerry Kimmel, Grandbury, Texas, and bred by Eric Storey, Henagar, Ala., carried NRHA Three Million Dollar Rider Tim McQuay, Tioga, Texas, to a share of the Co-Reserve Championship with a 224.
