Chics Magic Potion and Bob Avila

On Dec. 14, 2012, the horse world tragically lost the great reined cow horse performer and sire, Chics Magic Potion (Smart Chic Olena x Remedys Magic Potion x Remedys Reply). Bob and Dana Avila, “Magic’s” owner, Kenneth Banks, and everyone who was close to the 12-year-old stallion during his superlative career will certainly mourn this loss.

Chics Magic Potion was bred by Kim Muehlstaetter, Scottsdale, Ariz., and trained and shown for his entire career by National Reined Cow Horse Association Hall of Fame Horseman Bob Avila. After winning the 2003 NRCHA Snaffle Bit Futurity Open Championship, Magic and Avila went on to the National Reining Horse Association Futurity where they finished 10th in the Open and 4th in the Intermediate Open.

From there, the winning combination scored multiple major cow horse, reining and all-around titles, including an American Quarter Horse Association World Championship, NRCHA Stakes Championship, NRCHA Hackamore Classic Championship, Magnificent 7 Championship and World’s Greatest Horseman Reserve Championship. Following their brilliant National Stock Horse Association World’s Richest Championship in 2009, Avila announced Magic’s retirement from the competitive arena. Their career record together exceeded $318,000, making Chics Magic Potion one of the highest-earning reined cow horses of all time.

“He’s done so much for me. I’ve had him since he was a 2-year-old. I want him to retire when he’s on top,” Avila said at the time.
