Odds were favorable today for Travelin Smooth at the Tunica Futurity & Classic, a cutting event taking place through Feb. 4 in Tunica, Miss. The gelding and Texas professional trainer Michael Cooper worked their cows eighth in the first bunch of the 4-Year-Old Futurity Open, marking a 224 that claimed the Championship by a four-point margin. Travelin Smooth earned the $20,508 winner’s check for owners Karen and Brian Murray from Kansas.

A memorial service for Steven Wayne Pickett, 64, Cross Plains, Texas, a longtime cutting horse trainer, took place Feb. 2 at Higginbotham Funeral Home in Cross Plains. Pickettt won 1996 Southern Futurity Open and 2009 American Paint Horse Association World Championship cutting titles and earned more than $210,000 during his riding career. He died Jan. 28 in a three-fatality head-on crash near his home base.
