Topsail Whiz
The legendary 1987 reining stallion Topsail Whiz has once again made history by becoming the first Equi-Stat Elite $8 Million Reining Sire.
Tom and Susan McBeath, Union, Miss., bred Topsail Whiz (Topsail Cody x Jeanie Whiz Bar x Cee Red). Equi-Stat’s all-time leading reining breeder, Bob Loomis, Marietta, Okla., then purchased and raised Topsail Whiz and owned him until the horse’s death at 22 years of age in 2009. Topsail Whiz has sired 661 performing reining offspring who have earned $8,184,503 in the show pen.
Topsail Whiz’s top money-earning foal is 2000 gelding The Great Whiz (out of Shirleys Folly x Great Pine). Ridden by Duane Latimer and bred/owned by Lance Griffin, Ardmore, Okla., The Great Whiz was the 2003 National Reining Horse Association Futurity Open Champion and the 2004 National Reining Breeders Classic Open Reserve Champion. The Great Whiz’s earnings total $273,969.
The sire’s No. 2 earner is Easy Otie Whiz (out of Miss Poco Easy x My Lucero). Loomis bred the 1999 stallion, who is owned by Bobby Cook/Outwest Stallion Station, Scottsdale, Ariz. Easy Otie Whiz was a top-five Open finisher at the 2002 NRHA Futurity and 2003 NRHA Derby with Duane Latimer. In 2006, Matt Mills rode Easy Otie Whiz to win the United States Equestrian Federation Open Championship, qualifier for the 2006 FEI World Equestrian Games. The stallion has $233,611 in earnings.
Topsail Whiz’s No. 3 money-earning foal with $194,495 and his highest earner to date for 2011 with $68,696 is Carrie Rhodes’/CDR Farm’s 2006 stallion Whizkey N Diamonds (out of Princess In Diamonds x Shining Spark).
Topsail Whiz with Bob and Pam Loomis
Topsail Whiz has ranked among the reining industry’s all-time top 10 leading sires since 1996. In late 2008, Topsail Whiz’s offspring earnings surpassed Hollywood Dun It, who was the first to reach the $1- $5-Million Reining Sire thresholds. In 2009, Topsail Whiz became the first horse to reach $6 million is offspring earnings. In August 2010, eight months after his death, the son of Loomis’ 1980 NRHA Futurity Open Champion Topsail Cody reached another historic milestone: $7 Million Reining Sire status.
Loomis not only bred Topsail Whiz, but also showed him to first place in the 1990 Southwest Reining Horse Association Futurity Open, third in that year’s NRHA Futurity Open and fourth in the 1991 NRHA Derby Open. The pair earned $57,1778 together. Topsail Whiz was also the dominant factor that carried Loomis to the top of the reining breeders list time and time again.
