It was a clean sweep victory on Aug. 14 for KR Offtoseethewizard (Whizard Jac x Smart Little Prize x Smart And Trouble), ridden by JJ Lawrence for Cheree Kirkbride, Ocala, Fla., in the Sliding Summer Classic Bill Horn Derby in Perry, Ga.
With a score of 222, the 4-year-old earned four Lawson bronze trophies and the winner’s Paychecks in the $15,000-added Open, the $10,000-added Intermediate Open, the $5,000-added Limited Open and the $2,500-added Level 1 Open divisions. And, he beat the boss: Lawrence is an assistant trainer to Shawn Flarida, Springfield, Ohio.
Flarida, riding Paddys Irish Cody (Paddys Irish Whiskey x Baneda Cody x Corona Cody), for Raul Munoz, Joliet, Ill., scored a 220 to tie for the Open Reserve Championship with Miss Ruf Hollywood (Lil Ruf Peppy x Cee Miss Hollywood x Custom Crome), ridden by Mike McEntire for Ann Zambarano.
Hail of a Nic (Shine Like Hail x Lady Kimmernic Glo x Boomernic), ridden by Eric LaPorte for Dorminy Plantation, Fitzerald, Ga., scored a 219 to tie for Reserve with Ryan Potucek’s West Coast Wrangler (West Coast Whiz x Poco’s Wrangler Girl x Wranglers Mischief), ridden by Rob Huddleston, in the Intermediate Open, Limited Open and Level 1 divisions.
Marcia Walker, Dandridge, Tenn., riding her Kickit In The Bud (Nic It In The Bud x Peppys Little Orphan x A Little Shady Jac) won the $5,000-added Non-Pro division as well as the $3,000-added Intermediate Non-Pro, the $2,000-added Limited Non-Pro and the $1,000-added Level 1 Non-Pro with a score of 218.5.
The $1,000-added Prime Time Non-Pro was won by Mike Hancock, Rocky Mount, N.C., aboard his SLJ Hope Its a Juice (Smart Like Juice x Navahope x Doc Quixote).
Hancock, with his score of 217.5, was Co-Reserve Champion in the Non-Pro and Intermediate Non-Pro divisions with Shannon Rafacz, Citra, Fla., riding her Repeat Fine Footwork (Footworks Finest x Repeat BH x Be Aech Enterprise). Rafacz was also the Reserve Champion in the Limited Non-Pro division, while Angelo Berrettini earned the Level 1 Non-Pro Reserve on Wimp Cream (Wimpys Little Step x Dunits Cowgirl x Hollywood Dun It).
The Dorminy Plantation Futurity
Gunnatrashya (Colonels Smoking Gun x Natrasha x Trashadeous), ridden by Shawn Flarida for Arcese Quarter Horses, Weatherford, Texas, scored a 223 to win the $5,000-added Open division of the Dorminy Plantation Futurity on Aug. 15. In both looks and athletic ability, the 3-year-old stallion bears a striking resemblance to his maternal grandsire.

Ruf Whizzer (Lil Ruf Peppy x Sparkling Likea Whiz x Topsail Whiz), ridden by Mike Flarida for Guenter Bosner, Niceville, Fla., scored a 220.5 for the Open Reserve Championship and the No. 1 spot in the $3,000-added Intermediate Open division. Stroked By Top Prize (Freckles Top Prize x Power Stroked Gem x Kings Power Stroke), ridden by Mark Turner for Carla Brown, Dacula, Ga., scored a 218 for reserve in the Intermediate Open and first in the $2,000 added Limited Open.
Haidas Shining Spark (Lena Spark x Haidas Little Orphan x Haidas Little Pep), ridden by Jose Seutter for Julio Ardizon, Miami, Fla., scored a 216.5 for Reserve in the Limited Open division and the Championship in the $1,000-added Level 1 Open. KR Dark Remedy (Bueno Chexinic x Tejons Impy x Tejons Peppy Doc) scored a 214 for second place in the Level 1 Open.
Wayne Norris, Bishop, Ga., riding his Jacs Starlight (Bueno Starlight x Megas Miss Freckles x Marthas Mega Jac) set the pace in the Non-Pro divisions. He was draw No. 1, scored a 213.5 and nobody came close. Norris, coached by Francis Mercier, won the $3,000-added Non-Pro, the $2,000-added Intermediate Non-Pro and the $1,000-added Limited Non-Pro divisions. Kristen Bjorge, Anderson, S.C., scored a 211.5 for the $500-added Level 1 Non-Pro win on Sweet Nu Chic (Magnum Chic Dream x Nu Dixie Chex x Nu Chex To Cash). |
