Big Start for IRHA/NRHA Euro Derby

The qualifying Open go-round of the 2012 Italian Reining Horse Association/National Reining Horse Association Derby, held during the Salone del Cavallo, counted 116 entries and was held on Sunday, May 13. Once the last contestant had closed the day, Massimiliano Ruggeri of Italy riding Spat Split And White (Spat Olena x ARC Joy Surprise x Surprise Enterprise), owned by Le Colombare QH, took the lead in the Euro 40,000-added Open Level 4 division. They posted the highest score of 223.
Aboard the 6-year-old stallion, Ruggeri won the IRHA /NRHA Intermediate Open Futurity division and claimed third place honors in the IRHA/NRHA Derby Open Level 3 division. Past NRHA Open World Champion, Belgian Bernard Fonck, posted the second-highest score (219.5) with Big Sky Whizard (Topsail Whiz x Isle Bea Dun It x Hollywood Dun It) owned by Color Invest A & S Deredowscy.
With a score of 218, Pistolero Bo Sun (Bars Jacson Bo x Snappin Dixie x Snapper Cal Bar) ridden by Christian Perez of Italy for Maurizio Ferrariol, led the Euro 17,000-added Level 3 Open. Magnum Chic Whiz (Magnum Chic Dream x Whiz Jeanie x Topsail Whiz), ridden by Rieky Young for owner Nancy Schmidt, led the Level 2 Open after scoring a 216. In the Level 1, Mauro Vecchiutti earned the highest score with his own Captain Smoke (Frozen Sailor x Gunsmoke Susan x Cuttin Smoke).
The Derby Open finals will take place on Saturday at 2 p.m.
In a field of 102 contestants fighting for a spot in the Derby Non-Pro finals, young Gina Maria of Switzerland and Gunners Hollywood Dol (Hollywood Dun It x Docs Little Gunner), owned by Corinna Schumacher, posted the top score of the day (218) to lead the Euro 20,000-added Level 4, the Level 3 and the Level 2 divisions. With the 5-year-old Paint Horse mare, in this years’ edition of the NRHA European Futurity Non-Pro, Gina Maria tied for fifth place in the Level 3 and for fourth place in the Level 2 Non-Pro divisions.
The Derby Non-Pro finals will take place on Friday at 2 p.m.
