EHV-1 Outbreak: "Stamped Out" in CA & TN

Oct. 15, 2011 - According to the DVM360 website on Oct. 4, "Two outbreaks of equine herpesvirus (EHV-1) have been contained after surfacing in California and Tennessee.

According to The Horse publication, "As two different states handle unrelated equine herpesvirus-1 (EHV-1) outbreaks, statements released by the California Department of Food and Agriculture (CDFA) and the University of Tennessee Veterinary Medical Center (UTVMC) indicate that case totals are holding steady."

According to The Horse publication, six horses have been diagnosed equine herpesvirus-1 (EHV-1) in Tennessee. They contracted the disease from a single location, the Dixie Stampede Show located in Pigeon Forge.

According to the California Department of Agriculture, the state is experiencing another outbreak of Equine Herpesvirus (EHV-1) According to the CDA, "Seven of the eight horses displaying compatible clinical signs at the quarantined premises have been confirmed positive for neuropathogenic strain of EHV-1. Five of the confirmed cases have displayed neurologic signs and two of the cases have only demonstrated a fever. One of the severely affected neurologic confirmed cases has been euthanized." There were also two confirmed cases in a secondary exposed premises.
