Early on the morning of July 26, 2011, a fire destroyed an office building and several laboratories affiliated with the Colorado State University Equine Reproduction Laboratory in Fort Collins, Colo. Originally constructed around 1978, according to the College of Veterinary Medicine and Biomedical Sciences Director of Development Paul Maffey, the portion of the facility that was lost not only requires rebuilding, but also is in need of updates. After almost six months since the tragedy, the organization's first real fundraiser is set for Jan. 12.
Dr. Patrick McCue and Dr. William Swyers will conduct a free web seminar focusing on breeding mares with frozen semen. Major highlights such as mare management and principles of insemination will be covered. Held in conjunction with the educational seminar will be an auction for a breeding to legendary barrel horse sire Dash Ta Fame (First Down Dash x Sudden Fame x Tiny's Gay). The proceeds from the event will benefit the project to rebuild the Equine Reproduction Laboratory. Those interested in joining the online seminar may enroll by Jan. 11 here.
Architects who have been called in to assist on the project to rebuild and improve the ERL have estimated, in total, the construction and landscaping will cost approximately $5 million. While insurance money will be used to assist in these costs, improvements will require outside donations for funding. All donations made to Colorado State University for the ERL rebuild are tax deductible, and those interested in supporting the cause can visit the organization's online donation site.
Other fundraisers are currently in the planning stages and will be conducted into the spring of 2012.
