Genuine Doc Deceased at Age 34
GenuineDocCarol Rose Quarter Horses, Gainesville, Texas, made the sad announcement Monday, Nov. 14, 2011, that the legendary sire and grandsire Genuine Doc (Doc Bar x Gay Bar’s Gen x Gay Bar King) was put down at the age of 34.

The 1977 sorrel stallion, owned and bred by Carol Rose, leaves a long lineage of money-earning get and grand-get in his wake, including Shining Spark, his 1989 colt out of Diamonds Sparkle (x Mr Diamond Dude) whose own offspring have won $7.7 million in cutting, cow horse and reining, according to Equi-Stat.

Rose owned and showed Genuine Doc’s dam, Gay Bar’s Gen, to three National Cutting Horse Association Non-Pro World Championships in the 1960s, and Genuine Doc was the mare’s second baby by Doc Bar. (The first, a filly, died as a yearling.) In 1980, Genuine Doc and Matlock Rose made the Open Semifinals of the NCHA Futurity. The next year, Carol Rose rode the stallion to the Non-Pro Championship at the Atlantic Coast CHA Futurity, won third place in the NCHA Super Stakes Non-Pro and finished seventh in the NCHA Derby Non-Pro. In 1985, Bill Freeman won the Junior Cutting on Genuine Doc at the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo, and Carol rode the horse to the Senior Cutting Reserve Championship at the American Quarter Horse Association World Show. Genuine Doc has close to $25,000 in NCHA earnings.

Genuine Doc’s legacy, however, is most seen through his offspring, which have earned more than $2 million. His leading offspring is the 1982 mare Genuine Nita ($113,908 lifetime Equi-Stat cutting record; out of Go Nita x Peponita). After the deaths of Carol Rose’s superstar stallions Zann Parr Bar and Zans Diamond Sun, Genuine Doc took center stage at Carol Rose Quarter Horses. Rose foresaw great growth in the reining industry and decided to steer Genuine Doc in that direction, a bold cross-discipline move in the Western performance horse breeding industry at that time. Genuine Doc would prove instrumental in bringing the Doc Bar lineage into the reining industry.

His influence in reining is most obvious through his son Shining Spark. An AQHA Senior Reining World and NRHA Derby Champion with $62,674 in lifetime earnings, Shining Spark, owned by Rose, was the was the youngest National Reining Horse Association Million Dollar Sire at age 13 in 2002. Shining Spark is now less than $200,000 away from Equi-Stat Elite $4 Million Reining Sire Status. Through Shining Spark’s offspring, of which the highest earning is Shining N Sassy ($260,164; out of Sassy O Lena x Doc O’Lena), Genuine Doc ranks as Equi-Stat’s No. 7 Paternal Grandsire of reining horses with 442 grand-get earning a total of $4,034,981.

As the leading sire of reined cow horses, Shining Spark  also put his sire on the map as the No. 3 leading paternal grandsire of reined cow horses. Genuine Doc’s leading grand-offspring in reined cow horse is Smart Shinetta ($130,977; out of Smart Hickory x Doc’s Hickory). Genuine Doc has 258 paternal grand-get that have earned a total of $3,309,000 in reined cow horse.

Interestingly, Genuine Doc’s No. 1 paternal grand-offspring is not by Shining Spark. It’s the 2000 colt Jeeps Posi Traction (Genuine Jeep x Starstruck DB x Grays Starlight), who has earned $333,921 in the cutting pen. In total, the offspring of Genuine Doc’s sons have earned $10,336,884 across cutting, cow horse and reining, according to Equi-Stat.

Genuine Doc is also well known for the produce of his daughters. Their offspring have earned $4,105,287 across cutting, cow horse and reining. Genuine Doc ranks as top-25 maternal grandsire on Equi-Stat’s reined cow horse list (42 grand-get earning $407,294 total). The leading horse is Genuine Redbud’s 1997 foal Nic It In The Bud, by Reminic, who has $116,507 in reined cow horse earnings. Genuine Doc also ranks in the top 40 on the reining list (118 grand-get earning $628,352) and cutting list (140 grand-get earning $2,890,686). His No. 1 maternal grand-offspring is Soda Rey Bay (Dual Rey x Genuine Soda), who has earned $249,963 in the cutting pen.
