It took a work off on some challenging cattle for Mindy May Costello to capture the Cutting Championship of the AQHA Adequan Select show on Friday, Sept. 3 in Amarillo.

She and Raymond Whitmire were tied at 214 each at the end of the 15-horse finals. Costello, Kaufman, Texas, worked first in the work off on I CD Doc, her sorrel gelding (CD Olena x Doc Lady Wilson x Doc Wilson), and marked a 213.

Whitmire, Sallisaw, Okla., marked a 197 on Can Yall CD Freckles (mare, CD Olena x Miss Freckles Wilson x Freckles Playboy).

Working Cow Horse

Marilyn W. Harris, Cave Creek, Ariz., combined solid reining with some daring fence work to capture the Championship of the Working Cow Horse at the AQHA Adequan Select show on Friday in Amarillo.

On Irish A Shine (mare, Paddys Irish Whiskey x Shine O Lena x Shining Spark), she marked 214.5 in the rein work and 219.0 in the fence work for a winning total of 433.5.

The pair had also bested the field in Thursday’s prelims, with a combined score of 436.5. Gary Lynn Olson, Great Falls, Mont., on Kai Bar Fletch (gelding, Tanya’s Kai Bar x Shesa Jae Bar x Jae Bar Fletch, took the Reserve Championship with just a half-point less than Harris.

AQHA Select Ranch Sorting World Champions
A first-timer and a repeat champion took the title in the Ranch Sorting at the AQHA Adequan Select World Championship show in Amarillo Thursday evening. Ronnie McCormick Jr. had never shown at the Select before. In fact, he turned 50 just 10 days before the cutoff for qualifying for the show.

William Lawless had been on the winning sorting team at last year’s Select.

They paired up to pen three cows in the finals, working 13th in the 15-team field. Their total was nine penned in a lap time of 80.036 seconds.

Lawless, Mountain Home, Ark., rode mare Dancing Dual Rey (Dual Rey x Shadow Dancing Pine x Shadow Ridin Pine).

McCormick, Stillwater, Okla., rode gelding Hickory’s Lad Skeet (Doc’s Hickory x Tivios Lady Skeet x King Skeet).

McCormick made his trip to Amarillo worthwhile; just an hour earlier, he and “Skeet” were part of the World Championship penning team, with David Earl Hall and Bobby Gray.
