Kayla Norris
Kual Gun, the only cutting horse Kayla Norris owns, carried the nearly 26-year-old Sumrall, Miss., rider to victory in the 5/6-Year-Old Non-Pro at Music City Futurity on Sept. 19 with a 221 to earn the pair a career-best $17,445 check.

The 2003 mare (Playgun x Dual Kual x Dual Pep) and Norris already had clinched a Limited Non-Pro title with a two-go 429 to earn another $3,608.

So far this year, the smooth-moving mare Norris purchased last year has already carried her to more than double the earnings she’d previously acquired as a cutting horse rider.

“She’s my horse. I don’t have any other ones that I show, but in the future, I’ll have some babies out of her,” Norris said.

Norris bred the mare twice this year to High Brow CD, a 5-year-old stallion ridden to great success since late 2007 by her trainer, Austin Shepard.

Norris had previously earned less than $53,000 as a cutter. She topped a field including many riders who have won quite a bit more, including Reserve Champion Chad Bushaw, Poolville, Texas. Bushaw and his 5-year-old stallion, Snow Rey (Dual Rey x Lenas Snow x Doc’s Stylish Oak) took second with a 217 to earn $14,663. Bushaw also reached the finals aboard two others horses he owns while earning a combined $21,501 in the event.

Another frequent Non-Pro winner, Megan Miller, Poolville, Texas, guided two well-traveled horses she and her horse-training husband Matt Miller co-own (Travs Scooter and Soda Rey Bay) to a tie for third with two 216 scores to earn a combined $20,980.

“This is my first win in the Non-Pro,” Norris said. “I haven’t really competed in a lot of Non-Pro events. I competed in Tunica earlier in the year and we made the finals, but that was really the only Non-Pro event we had competed in before this.”

Kayla and her husband, Lee Michael Norris, own and operate an oil and gas distributorship in Southern Mississippi, along with other business interests, and he competes at fishing tournaments.

Before securing her first Non-Pro title at Music City Futurity one day before her 26th birthday, the $5,389 Norris and Kual Gun earned by winning an Amateur title at the NCHA Super Stakes in April had been the most she’d ever earned in a single event.

The Music City Futurity ends Sept. 20 with finals in the 3-Year-Old Non-Pro, 4-Year-Old Non-Pro, 4-Year-Old Amateur and 5/6-Year-Old Amateur divisions. Norris and Kual Gun will compete again on her Sept. 20 birthday in the 5/6-Year-Old Amateur finals.
