Dear NCHA Members, I would like to take this opportunity to thank all of the show producers and affiliates for their cooperation in canceling all NCHA approved shows for this weekend (May 20 – 22) due to the outbreak of the EHV-1 virus. The NCHA is tracking the EHV-1 virus through information provided to us by our members, State Veterinarians, and practicing veterinarians working with potential cases. We are asking anyone with credible information to call the NCHA offices at 817-244-6188 so that we can make an informed decision as to the future shows in our industry for the next few weeks.
The NCHA is posting information that has been confirmed on the website at www.nchacutting.com and our NCHA Facebook page. I would ask that anyone interested, please take a look at those sites. There have been many rumors circulating out there and they are just that - rumors. Some people are blaming others for this and the truth is, no one is to blame. This is an unfortunate virus that showed up at the cutting in Ogden and has infected numerous horses. So, without blaming anyone, let's all work on a solution and get back to cutting.
I would like to thank all of the professional horsemen and members who have voluntarily imposed quarantines on their facilities and are being proactive in this situation by not allowing horses in or out of their facilities. As there is not a specific vaccine for this virus, the fastest way to stop it is by stopping the transportation of horses. Although there have been cases in other equine disciplines in the past, this is the first time we have experienced the EHV-1 virus to this extent in the cutting horse industry. I think the membership of the NCHA is to be commended on their swift actions and their commitment to the welfare of our horses and others. I would also like to thank Dr. Jerry Black from Colorado State University (and a member of the Executive Committee) for all of his leadership in keeping us informed of what is happening nationwide. The NCHA staff should also be thanked for all of their hard work during this time.
With all of us pulling together, I know we can get through this and we will be much better for having gone through it. I am asking each of you to keep your horses at home for the time being and take some time off to enjoy your families and friends. I, for one, am proud to be a member of the NCHA especially when I see how we all come together in this situation.
Thank you, Chris Benedict NCHA President
