Beamon Ashley
Horse trainer and longtime National Cutting Horse Association employee Beamon Ashley, who manned gates letting cattle into the pen at Fort Worth cutting events for many years and befriended many cutters, died at age 88 on Sunday, Aug. 22, in Dallas, Texas, at Cedar Hill Health Care Center.
Ashley was inducted into NCHA Members Hall of Fame in 2000. Funeral services under direction of Singing Hills Funeral Home will be conducted at St. Paul Baptist Church in Dallas on Monday, Aug. 30 at 11 a.m. Ashely will be buried at Dallas/Fort Worth National Cemetery. National Cutting Horse Association announcer Tom Holt will speak at the service and many cutters that Ashley associated with over the years will attend.
Respected as a horse trainer who worked with ropers, reining and pleasure horses, Ashley never trained a cutting horse, but was a big fan of cutting and cutters respected him, too. That respect included Granbury, Texas, cutting horse owner Jerry Jones naming one of his top young prospects Mr Beamon, after Ashley.
Mr Beamon, a gray 1998 gelding (Playgun x Smart Little Easter x Smart Little Lena) trained and ridden by Tag Rice, started his outstanding and ongoing career by finishing as the 2001 NCHA Futurity Open Reserve Champion with a 222 finals run to earn $162,524. Mr Beamon had earned $314,260 through early spring. He also reached the Open finals at May’s Western Nationals in Ogden, Utah, with his present trainer, Rock Hedlund.
Many cutting horse riders and owners showed their appreciation for Beamon Ashley and his late wife, Ollie, with a 50th Anniversary party at a cutting in Sulphur Springs, Texas. Beamon and Ollie Ashley were not surprised by the party, but were caught off guard when they were handed keys to a new pickup purchased with donations from cutters.
