Carl Gerwien Grabs 5/6-Year-Old Non-Pro Championship

Marking a 221 from his second draw in the 12-horse finals, Carl Gerwien, Alberta, Canada, piloted his homebred 2007 gelding Mia Smart Quejana (Quejanaisalena x Tinker Bell Hickory x Doc's Hickory) to the Champion title worth $11,820.

Gerwien is a talented and experienced non-pro who boasts an Equi-Stat record of more than $1 million. Mia Smart Quejana's record is now merely a few hundred dollars short of $50,000 thanks to this win. Among their past stellar performances together is a second-place finish at the 2011 Brazos Bash in Weatherford, Texas.

Dianna Helm, the wife of Bill Helm, who won the 4-Year-Old Amateur the day before, marked a 217 aboard Aristo Jazz (Smart Aristocrat x Sheza Jazzy Player x Freckles Playboy), bred by Slate River Ranch, Weatherford, Texas. The husband-and-wife team own the 2007 gelding together. According to Bill, this is the first time they have ever shown 5/6-year-olds.

"Dianna has had a lot of success," Bill said of his wife. "That's my joy."

The 5/6-Year-Old Limited Non-Pro Champion was Carly Chiarelli, Basalt, Colo., with her 2006 gelding Dualler Cat (High Brow Cougar x The Dualler Miracle x The Dualler), bred by Michael and Becky Coronado, Las Vegas, after they marked a 212 for $2,381.

Following by only one point, Michelle Cowan marked a 211 for the Limited Non-Pro Reserve title in her home town aboard Gar Bella Lena (Duals Blue Boon x PG Selena x Playgun), bred by Brenda Pieper, Marietta, Okla.

4-Year-Old Non-Pro

Wrapping up the Arbuckle Mountain Futurity in Ardmore, Okla., were the 4-Year-Old Non-Pro finals. The class, consisting of eight horses, was dominated by Ty Moore, Madill, Okla., and his mare Mrs Bay Cat (High Brow Cat x Miss Bay Gun x Playgun), bred by Cowan Ranch Inc, Ardmore, Okla.

The horse-and-rider team marked an impressive 222 to win $11,980. This accomplishment more than doubles the horse's Equi-Stat record, and it brings her rider's to more than $260,000.

Chief Red Warrior (Cats Red Feather x Aristolcrat x Smart Aristocrat), bred by Jack Waggoner and Susan Ferguson, marked a 216 with his owner, Tim May, Saltillo, Miss., for the Reserve title. That performance earned them a $9,959 check.

In the 4-Year-Old Limited Non-Pro, Brett Johnson, Hico, Texas, took top honors aboard Second Timez A Charm (One Time Pepto x Wood Ya Belle x Zack T Wood), bred by Dick Gaines, Byers, Texas. They marked a 213 and earned $2,822.

Reserve Champion in the Limited Non-Pro was Christina Cox with Boozin Susan (Smooth As A Cat x Ricochet Freckles x Smart Lil Richocet), bred by Kyle Manion, Aubrey, Texas. Cox and her husband, Fort Morgan,Colo., based trainer, Lloyd, own the mare and they will bank $2,117 for the performance.

Feb. 25-26, 4-Year-Old Open

The 4-Year-Old Open finals in Ardmore, Okla., at the Arbuckle Mountain Futurity was made up of 24 horses, but nobody could touch Once In A Blu Boon, ridden by trainer James Payne.

The horse-and-rider team marked an impressive 223, which would best the field by five points. This is Once In A Blu Boon’s (Peptoboonsmal x Autumn Boon x Dual Pep) first major limited-age event win. The stallion is owned by Charlotte Farms Inc, Rosston, Texas.

Bill Riddle piloted Ruby Tuesdays Cat, owned by Ellen Carter, Jackson, Wyo., to the Co-Reserve Championship with a 218. He was matched by SDP Twist Of Sue (Meradas Blue Sue x Bingos Nurse x Dual Rey) with trainer and co-owner Lloyd Cox. Cox owns the horse with his wife, Christina.

Cats Date (WR This Cats Smart x Peptos Special Date x Peptoboonsmal) carried trainer Hayden Upton to a Championship in the Limited Open with a score of 213. Owned by Forrest Saunders, Australia, Cats Date earned $1,852.

The Limited Open Reserve title went to Nitas Oakwood and James Davis.

4-Year-Old Amateur

Bill Helm, Nowata, Okla., piloted he and his wife, Dianna’s, gelding Spoonfula Laney (Hes A Peptospoonful x Catalaney x High Brow Cat) to a Champion title with a 216. Helm was the eighth draw in the 13-horse finals and bested the field by six points. He was greeted on his way out of the show pen by his wife with a congratulation kiss.

From a fourth draw, Gayle Trotter, Millsap, Texas, rode homebred Mr Teerific (Smokin Trona x Lenas Pepperoni x Lenas Star) to Reserve with a 210.

5/6-Year-Old Amateur

Seventeen horses made it back to the 5/6-Year-Old Amateur finals, and from a first draw, John Lindsey, Olympia, Wash., piloted Disco Crat (Smart Aristocrat x Jazzy CD x CD Olena) to a 217. From the sixth hole, Viki Williamson, Argyle, Texas, and Young Gun Merada (Cats Merada x Young Guns Katie x Young Gun) matched the leaders with a 217.

None of the other horses could top them, so Lindsey and Williamson were named Co-Champions.

The closest anyone came to the winners was a 212, which M Wade Smith, Geary, Okla., marked aboard Ima Smart Move (AP) (Smart Little Lena x Docs Hickory Doll (AP) x Doc’s Hickory) for Reserve.

Thursday, Feb. 23, 5/6-Year-Old Open

The Arbuckle Mountain Futurity in Ardmore, Okla., kicked off Monday, Feb. 20, and named its first Champion Thursday, Feb. 23.

Little Pepto Cat (High Brow Cat x Little Pepto Gal x Peptoboonsmal), owned and bred by Bluestem Ranch, Weatherford, Texas, marked a 223 in the 19-horse finals for the win in the 5/6-Year-Old Open.

Piloted by Weatherford trainer Matt Gaines, the 2006 stallion earned $20,000, pushing his Equi-Stat record to more than $120,000.

A 222.5 tie for Reserve welcomed recent Bonanza co-Champions Special Nu Baby and Sly Playgirl and their riders, Gaines and Jaime Snider, respectively. It would seem that these two teams are truly in a match race.

Gaines rode 2006 mare Special Nu Baby (Dual Rey x Nu I Wood x Zack T Wood), owned by Gary and Shannon Barker, Madill, Okla., and bred by Crystal Creek Ranch, Aledo, Texas, to a $16,250 check for their co-Reserve Champion performance.

Special Nu Baby boasted an Equi-Stat record of more than $270,000 prior to her title in Ardmore.

Matching Gaines’ score for the co-Reserve Champion title and $16,250 was Sly Playgirl (That Sly Cat x Taquitas Playgirl x Freckles Playboy), owned by Rocking L Cutting Horses, Boca Rotan, Fla., and bred by Slate River Ranch, Weatherford, Texas, with Burleson, Texas, based trainer, Snider in the saddle.

Thanks to her Arbuckle performance, Sly Playgirl’s Equi-Stat record reflects more than $87,000 in winnings.

The 5/6-Year-Old Limited Open Champion, with a composite 426.5 from the go-rounds, was GS Little Tapolena (Smart Little Lena x Puddy Tap x High Brow Cat), owned and bred by Gordon Sevig, Walford, Iowa, and ridden by Kenneth Miller.

The 5/6-Year-Old Limited Open Reserve title went to James Davis and Belles On My Peptoes (Peptoboonsmal x Kadee Lena Belle x CD Olena), owned by Mike and Laurie Jones, Cushing, Okla., and bred by Church Family Trust, Las Vegas.
