Jay McLaughlin and Carol Rose
A Shiner Named Sioux (Shining Spark x Docs Sulena x Doc Olena), owned by Carol Rose, Gainesville, Texas, wowed the crowd at the American Quarter Horse Association World Championship Show in the Junior Working Cow Horse. Ridden by Jay McLaughlin, also of Gainesville, the stallion bested the field of 16 finalists to win the World Champion title.

Finishing as the Reserve Champions, Zackly Right Time (Peptotime x Zacks Nu Star x Zack T Wood), owned by Margo McKinney, Midland, Texas, carried Millsap, Texas, trainer Tom Neel to mark a 217.5 in the rein work and a 228 in the cow work for a composite score of 445.5.
Senior Working Cow Horse
Corey Cushing
Tough cattle and talented horses made the Senior Working Cow Horse an exciting event for the audience to watch. Corey Cushing, Scottsdale, Ariz., guided his mount to his first World Champion title. Riding 2005 mare Rising Starlight (Little Bay Starlight x Peppys Hot Star x Lucky W Peppy Lena), owned by Eric Dunn, Norwich, Kan., Cushing saw a 221 in the rein work and a 228 in the cow work for a winning composite score of 449.
Cushing’s close friend, Doug Williamson, Bakersfield, Calif., followed with a Reserve Champion-worthy performance. Riding Bill and Janiejill Tointon’s Shining Lil Nic (Smart Shiner x Dig A Lil Nic x Diggers Rest), he guided the stallion to a composite score of 445.5 – 218 in the rein work and 227.5 in the cow work. The Tointons have had an extremely successful year with their cow horses. Their gelding, Shiners Dun Juan, won the National Reined Cow Horse Association Snaffle Bit Futurity earlier this fall. |
