Shiners Nickle Dies at 5 Years Old PDF Print E-mail

Shiners Nickle (Shining Spark x Shesa Lota Nic x Reminic) was found dead in his stall during the National Reining Breeders Classic held April 18-24 in Katy, Texas. The 5-year-old stallion was owned by Billy and Michelle Cannon, of Cannon Quarter Horses in Venus, Texas. The horse was standing at Carol Rose Quarter Horses in Gainesville, Texas.

Jay McLaughlin, head trainer at the Carol Rose ranch, had taken the buckskin stallion to the NRBC in hopes of showing him. He found the horse in the stall, and there were no signs of struggle or colic. Shiners Nickle was taken to Texas A&M University for an autopsy. The cause of death is inconclusive.

Bred by Carol Rose and Lyle Lovett, Shiners Nickle was the 2009 National Reined Cow Horse Association Snaffle Bit Futurity Open Co-Reserve Champion with Todd Crawford. Shiners Nickle had qualified for the 2011 American Quarter Horse Association World Show and the NRCHA World’s Greatest Horseman competition. The stallion had $107,037 in career earnings, according to Equi-Stat.
