In the Blood: Hickory Holly Time

The crowning of the World’s Greatest Horseman takes place each year at the National Reined Cow Horse Association’s (NRCHA) Celebration of Champions. This year’s World’s Greatest Horseman was Kelby Phillips on Hickory Holly Time. They won with a composite score of 890.5 (220 herd/222.5 rein/224.5 steer/223.5 cow) and earned the $40,000 first-place check.

Hickory Holly Time is no stranger to the winner’s circle; he’s won more than $230,000, including the 2013 NRCHA Snaffle Bit Futurity Intermediate Open Championship, the 2014 NRCHA Derby Open Championship and the 2016 NRCHA Open Hackamore World Championship. He was bred by Arcese Quarter Horses USA and is owned by DT Horses LLC.

The pedigree of Hickory Holly Time (One Time Pepto x Hickorys Holly Cee x Doc’s Hickory) is no stranger to the winner’s circle, either. It is a pedigree that shows some linebreeding that we often see, but it also contains some key outcrosses.

One Time Soon was an unshown mare. Her foals have earnings of $1.2 million, according to Equi-Stat, including five foals that have won in excess of $100,000 each. One Time Pepto is her No. 1 performer. She has two money-winners with earnings greater than $200,000, including Highbrow Time ($215,515), the 2014 Pacific Coast Cutting Horse Association (PCCHA) Cutting Stakes Champion; and Faith N Risk ($209,865), the 1998 PCCHA Classic/Challenge Open Champion.

Smart Little Lena (Doc O’Lena x Smart Peppy x Peppy San) is an NCHA Triple Crown Champion, having won or tied for a win in the NCHA Futurity Open, Super Stakes Open and Derby Open. He earned $743,275 in the arena. He is the sire of horses with earnings of $42.3 million. His leading money-winner is Red White And Boon ($922,063), a three-time NCHA Non-Pro World Champion, NCHA Open World Champion and the leading cutting horse of all time.

Smart Little Lena represents the mating of a son of Doc Bar with a daughter of Peppy San. Peppy San is a full brother to Mr San Peppy, the sire of Peppy San Badger. The Doc Bar on Peppy San is a reverse of Peppy San Badger on a granddaughter of Doc Bar. This is still linebreeding to these bloodlines.

The dam of One Time Soon is Uno Princess, the 1968 NCHA Futurity Open Champion. She was an NCHA Bronze and Silver Award winner, earning $14,111. She was also an American Quarter Horse Association (AQHA) Superior cutting horse and the 1977 AQHA High-Point Cutting Mare. She is the dam of four earners listed in Equi-Stat, including Docs Miss N Dinero ($15,049) and Lynx Princess ($11,394).

Uno Princess represents some of the outcross blood we see in this pedigree. Her sire was Jose Uno, the 1969 NCHA Open World Champion. He was sired by Joe’s Last, by Joe Reed P-3. Her dam was Hanna’s Princess, by El Rey H, who was a full brother to King P-234. They were sired by Zantanon and out of Jabalina, by Strait Horse.

Doc’s Hickory (Doc Bar x Miss Chickasha x Chickasha Mike) earned 32 of his 42 AQHA cutting points in 1978 to be named the AQHA Reserve High-Point Cutting Horse and the High-Point Cutting Stallion. In the NCHA, he earned his Certificate of Ability with $1,196. He is now Equi-Stat’s No. 9 all-time leading sire of cutting money-earners at $20.8 million. His cutting offspring include Miss Silver Pistol ($512,755), the 1985 NCHA Futurity Non-Pro Champion; and Hicapoo ($447,855), the 1994 NCHA Horse of the Year. He is the maternal grandsire of horses that have earned $28.4 million. His leading earner on that list is Meradas Little Sue ($730,552), the 1996 NCHA Horse of the Year.

Miss Chickasha (Chickasha Mike x Maggie Cowden x Tucumcari) earned $7,367 in the NCHA and has 69 cutting points in the AQHA for her Superior. She was the dam of only two performers – Doc’s Fox ($46,804) and his full brother, Doc’s Hickory.

Miss Chickasha gives the pedigree some more outcross blood. Chickasha Mike (Billy Clegg x Millie M x Old Mike 1) was the 1956 NCHA Open Reserve World Champion. Maggie Cowden is by Tucumcari, a son of Billy Clegg.

The dam of Hickorys Holly Cee is Miss Cee Nita, an unshown daughter of Peponita, who was the 1977 and 1979 NCHA Open World Champion, and 1977 and 1978 AQHA Senior Cutting World Champion. She is the dam of horses that have won $251,911, and her second leading money-winner is Cee Mr Hickory ($59,383).

Peponita is an Equi-Stat Elite $2 Million Sire with foals like Leanin Nita ($222,454) and Mr Peponita Flo ($148,875), the 1991 NCHA Futurity Open Reserve Champion. It should be noted that Mr Peponita Flo is out of Brinks Hickory Flo, by Doc’s Hickory. Daughters of Peponita have foal earnings of $3.4 million, with Peponitas Acre ($272,986) as the leading money-earner.

Peponita (Peppy San x Bonita Tivio x Poco Tivio), when crossed with Doc’s Hickory (by Doc Bar), gives the pedigree of Hickory Holly Time a linebreeding to Doc Bar, Leo San and Poco Bueno, as we have seen with One Time Pepto. Thus, we see linebreeding to this cross in Hickory Holly Time.

Cee Miss Holly, the dam of Miss Cee Nita, earned $7,570 in the NCHA for her Certificate of Ability, and she tied for fifth in the 1966 NCHA Futurity Open. She has her Register of Merit in the AQHA with 28 cutting points. She is also the dam of Sanacee ($42,846).

Cee Miss Holly (Cee Bars x Miss Poker Gold x Hollywood Gold) represents another outcross on the Doc Bar/Leo San/Poco Bueno cross. The outcross blood of horses like Cee Miss Holly, Miss Chickasha and Uno Princess serve as suppliers of genetic diversity in the pedigree and yet, through linebreeding, the breeder can keep a high relationship to the individuals he is linebreeding to.
